Variable-order fracture mechanics and its application to dynamic fracture

Abstract This study presents the formulation, numerical solution, and validation of a theoretical framework based on concept variable-order mechanics capable modeling dynamic fracture in brittle quasi-brittle solids. More specifically, reformulation elastodynamic problem via variable fractional-order operators enables unique extremely powerful approach to model nucleation propagation cracks solids under loading. The resulting formulation is fully evolutionary, hence enabling analysis complex crack patterns without requiring any priori assumption damage location growth path, using algorithm numerically track evolving surface. evolutionary nature formalism also prevents need for additional partial differential equations predict evolution field, suggesting conspicuous reduction complexity computational cost. Remarkably, naturally capturing detailed features characteristic such as surface roughening well single multiple branching. accuracy robustness proposed are validated by comparing results direct simulations with experimental data typical benchmark problems available literature.
